Total Weight-based Shipping
Total Weight shipping in WooCommerce calculates the shipping fee based on the entire combined weight of the cart’s contents.
For example, if a customer adds three products to their cart—one weighing 2 kg, another 3 kg, and a third 5 kg. So, the total cart weight is 10 kg. If your shipping rule charges $1.50 per kg, the total shipping cost would be $15.
It’s especially useful for bulk or heavy-item stores where weight has a direct impact on delivery costs.
Total Weight-based Shipping in Shipping Manager
First, navigate to WooCommerce > Settings and then click Shipping. Now, you can see that two zones have been created already. Click Edit to customize the shipping rules of that zone and apply a shipping fee based on the Total weight.
In the next section, you will see the available shipping methods. You can also create a new shipping method by clicking the Add Shipping Method button. Now, click the Edit button to add or customize the shipping rules.
Now, you can view the shipping rules available on the list and select Total Weight from the list.
Now set two different total weight ranges and shipping fees for them. We’ve put one range between 1kg – 20 kg, and the shipping fee is $10. Another total weight range is between 21 kg – 50 kg, and the shipping fee is $20. Then click Save Changes to apply the changes you’ve made.
The products in your shop must have a weight value since we are selecting the total weight-based shipping. Now, go to Products > All Products and click Edit to set a weight for.
Scroll down a bit and click Shipping, and set the weight value. We’ve set the weight to 5kg for this instance. Then scroll up and click the Update button.
Now, go to the shop page and select a product from the shop. We’ve added a product to the cart and then clicked View Cart.
Now, if you go to the cart page, you can see that the delivery or shipping cost is $10. This is because the Total weight (5 kg) falls under the range of 1kg -20kg
Now, let’s increase the number of products so that the total weight increases to a different range. The current product weight is 30kg (4 products * 5kg per unit ), which falls under the 21kg – 50kg weight range. So, the shipping fee for this weight range is $20.
